The town of Myitkyina in
Northern Burma's Kachin state is mostly
inhabited by Jinghpaw-speaking tribal
people who are largely Christian,
either Catholic or Baptist. This is an exception compared to other parts
of Burma (or Myanmar
as the government prefers to call it) as most of
the population elsewhere is Buddhist.
Kachin is relatively peaceful
compared to other regions such as the Shan State where there has long
been fighting and a movement towards independence. The Myanmar
government is cruel and barbaric, but the people of Kachin have managed
to maintain an uneasy peace. The region prospers thanks to its close
proximity to China and the markets are filled with imported goods, as
well as locally produced food grown along the fertile Irriwaddy River
which flows beside the town. There is a Catholic seminary where young
men are training to be priests.
Tourism is just beginning in this
picturesque part of the country, and several flights a day come in from
Mandalay and the capital
Rangoon. On the same visit I passed through
both Mandalay and Rangoon to visit temples,
monasteries and the famous
Shwe Dagon Buddhist pagoda.
